- How to read a scientific paper
- You need to store the information you learn
- you need to think critically of the paper
1. Read title and abstract first
- write a sentence: what is the big question the authors are trying to answer?
- then 3-5 summary sentences of the introduction
- Cordon off a section for each aim of the paper to fill in
2. Making sure materials and methods are sound so that you know the data is soundly gathered
- for each of the cordoned off aims sections, fill in with the methods the authors are using to answer those aims
3. review the results section
- look at graphs and tables and make sure you understand what the author is reporting
- in cordoned off sections under the methods used for those questions put results for those sections
4. Discussions can be hit or miss
- if long winded maybe skim, if not maybe there is some great discourse going on
- if there are interesting notes put it under your cordoned off sections
