#### [[ADHD hyperfocus is a double edged sword of both deep work and avoidance]]
---
One of the more useful parts of ADHD is the ability to hyper-focus on a task or activity which is also commonly referred to as the _flow state_.
Hyper-focus stems from the dopamine deficiency in the brain which is a defining trait of the ADHD brain. With a lack of dopamine it is hard to mentally pivot away from tasks that are enjoyable, stimulating, and challenging as these release the dopamine that we have a deficiency of. This effect of being unable to pull ones self away from a task or activity means that mundane and un-stimulating activities are magnified in difficulty for those with an ADHD brain. [[People with ADHD do not have a lack of attention only an issue regulating attention]].
Where this aspect of the disorder can be best utilized and where it is often deployed by those with ADHD is in the aim to be productive. If there are activities that the individual enjoys and is stimulated by that cause them to fall into the hyper-focused _flow state_ then if this approach is _"weaponized"_ then individual can set out to use hyper-focus to easily dedicated large swathes of time, effort, and cognitive energy towards a task, project, goal, activity, etc.
Some fields / activities that are better suited for those with **certain** presentations of ADHD are
- complex problem solving and thought (Software Engineering / Gen. Engineering)
- High priority / Time Sensitive / Quick Paced work that provides a sense of urgent immediacy
