The hierarchy of needs boils down to the idea that there are a series of needs that humans have before we can be motivated towards higher levels of pursuit.
I.E. you wouldn't spend your whole day thinking about the "meaning of life" if you're lost in the wilderness with no food, water, or shelter.
Your immediate motivation is the fulfillment of your base needs to survive. After levels of needs are met, humans expand our motivations to include more psychological goals beyond base survival and safety.
We might then venture to seek out companionship, relationships, and even a sense of belonging, community, and achievement like simpler tribal cultures.
Once, all of these pre-requisites are achieved one can settling into the task of trying to achieve self-actualization. Achieving ones full potential.
