#### [[People desire to be a part of something larger than themselves and so devote themselves to their employer]]
---
Human beings are always searching for a cause, an identity, an entity to derive a sense of self and belonging from. People flock to religions, social movements, and cliques in order to feel like they are a part of something larger than themselves and to feel that deep primal need to feel included^[[[Loneliness feels horrible as an evolutionary mechanism to foster strong community ties in order to boost chances of survival]]].
People spend so much of their time at work trying to earn a living and since we form friendships in our workplace we gain a rooted sense of belonging to the entity of the business/employer and then form a sense of our identity associated with that.
Whats the first thing we ask in America?
> What do you do?
We tie our identities to our employers and our jobs instead of who we are and what we do outside of that facet of our complex human experience.
People are living to work and not working to live. The experiences of life that truly matter are often happening outside of the workplace. ^bb0fbb
